BITLY: Browser Extensions
The Browser Extension, Bitly's most popular satellite product, integrates with existing accounts, allowing users to shorten, customize and share links directly from Chrome, Safari and Firefox.
The Chrome Extension and Bookmarklet (used by Safari and Firefox users) were very popular work flow tools that needed a desperate design update. With the release of Bitly's newly designed platform, we needed satellite products that felt equally modern and fresh.
Update the design of our most popular satellite product to reflect the current iteration of the Bitly Platform.
rethinking the EXTENSION
We went big in our thinking: despite the Chrome Extension and Bookmarklet only having free features, we considered new ways to integrate paid features.
The original design of the Chrome Extension and Bookmarklet
Preliminary idea: Include paid features using expandable modules, saving valuable real estate
We pushed the expandable modules concept further, which resulted in the tabbed action panel. This design inspired our paid product; we simultaneously added tabs to bitly's platform and chrome extension.
The final design allowed paying customers to login and use premium features through the browser extension.
We continued to iterate on Bitly's platform design. To keep parity between the primary product and satellite products, we shipped a V2. In addition to building an extension for Chrome, we introduced a Safari and Firefox extension.
